Important design Elements for the Mobile Internet

Last night’s call dealt with important design elements for the mobile internet and how they influence web design in general.

Let’s have a look at some samples:

Web Design for Mobile Devices

Design with Contrasts

Not all smart phones and mobile devices have a crystal clear display as the iPhone. Also the increase of luminosity of the screen has it’s price: electricity and therefore battery life. Don’t print gray on gray!

Don’t use Flash

Flash does either not display or produce unsatisfactory results on mobile devices. It is therefore recommended to pair flash with an alternative feature for mobile devices, such as an image or a jQuery driven component or you just get a blank field:

No Flash on Mobile devices

Use crisp Fonts

The better the fonts the more readable the site. At least the zoomed version should be easy to read:

Unzoomed fontsThe above sample is not zoomed, below details using the zoom:

Zoomed FontsDesign Accessible Navigation

Not only must the navigation be easy to read, but it must also be easy to click with a finger on a small touch-screen:

Accessible NavigationThe un-zoomed display above allows for easy navigation either from the top menu or from the images which are linked to content.

Note: All above images are screen-shots from the iPhone 4. The resolution on that iPhone is 960 x 640 pixels at 326 ppi. Click on the images to see the original output from the iPhone. For publishing reasons I had to downsize the quality of the images somewhat, however they represent quite well the reality.

Semiomantics XO is Mobile

The Semiomantics XO Theme for WordPress is designed for mobile devices since 2009. The site holds in vertical display without sideways scrolling and the built in image slider displays on mobile devices!
